One day, Tewanima was forcefully taken from his village on Second Mesa, Arizona, and sent to a boarding school in Pennsylvania, where he was forced to give up his Hopi culture and learn American ways. While there, however, Tewanima was encouraged to run, and he eventually won many marathons and competed in the Olympics twice. This age-appropriate biography teaches children about the prejudice and hardships that Tewanima and other American Indians endured as well as the hope and strength of character that kept Tewanima strong. The government tried to rid him of his language and traditions, but Tewanima always ran for his tribe, keeping his heritage alive in his heart. Solomon is a retired elementary-reading specialist with more than thirty-five years of educational experience. She began writing children's books as a teacher and has continued to write a variety of children's works, including plays, picture books, early chapter books, middle-grade fiction, and historical fiction. Solomon is an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and a member of a local writing group. She is also the author of Pelican's Christopher Newport: Jamestown Explorer and Cathy Williams, Buffalo Soldier. Solomon resides in Lansdowne, Virginia. Lisa Fields was always encouraged to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. She received a BFA in illustration from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2006. The illustrator of Barreling Over Niagara Falls, published by Pelican, her work has appeared in Boys' Life and Highlights magazines. A member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, she resides in New York City.
